Driving Theory Exam Kit: idea to store, built solo

Driving Theory Exam Kit is a free app that helps UK learners prepare for their driving theory test — practice questions, mock tests, hazard perception prep and road-sign learning.
It’s entirely my own product: I designed it, built it, shipped it to both stores and grew it myself. It’s the clearest signal of what I can do when I own the whole thing.
The challenge
As a solo project there was no team to lean on — every decision, from data model to app-store listing to growth, was mine to make and get right.
Test prep also lives or dies on content quality and a distraction-free study experience: the app had to make working through a large question bank feel effortless, and had to be found by learners in a crowded category.
The approach
I built it in React Native so a single codebase could serve both platforms, with the question bank and progress stored locally so studying works anywhere, offline.
Because I owned distribution too, I designed the store listings and used app-store optimisation and organic search to bring in learners — closing the loop from product to growth without a marketing budget.

The outcome
Taken from a blank page to a live app on both the App Store and Google Play, entirely solo.
Grown through organic search and store optimisation rather than paid acquisition — proof I can own a product end to end, not just a feature ticket.
